Waste management

Waste management

Today, in France, we produce 1.2 kg of waste per inhabitant per day. The volume of waste increases by 2.5% per year. INSA Rennes, a place of teaching and research but also a place of life, is directly impacted by this waste issue. This is why the institute is involved on different levels: management of hazardous waste produced by laboratories, implementation of selective sorting on campus, reduction of ink and paper consumption, student initiatives and even construction work. research relating to this problem. Focus on some actions…

  • The 2016 Waste Management Roadmap of INSA Rennes

Recyclable waste (plastic, cardboard, canned goods, glass, paper, toner cartridges), household waste, IT waste, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), special waste (chemistry), used batteries, green waste, wood waste and rubble… so many types of waste that find their trash cans on campus for another life. Indeed, INSA Rennes has implemented its 2016 Waste Management Roadmap and is continuing its work to go even further with the implementation of selective sorting in classroom areas and staff offices.

For example, a collection of writing equipment (pens, felt-tip pens, mechanical pencils, highlighters, markers, correctors, fountain pens with cartridges) was set up at INSA Rennes. The collection of used pencils in schools and universities allows the feline protection association, Les Pashas, to receive 2 euro cents per pencil collected. The pencils are given to the company Terracycle which, in partnership with Bic, recycles them. The pencils are thus transformed into furniture (Ubicuity™ brand).

  • Waste reduction: student initiatives

The "Echange Afrique INSA association" collects newspapers, papers and magazines in order to resell them to the VEOLIA company. In 2018, 700 kg of paper were collected! They will be used in particular to build a literacy center for women from the Goundi and Zoula group, west of Koudougou, in Burkina Faso.
